Campbellsville High School head custodian Tommy Allen received the Change Award at the Campbellsville Board of Education meeting on Monday, Sept. 9.
Superintendent Kirby Smith honors three Change Award winners each month, including a certified and classified employee and a community member.
Allen received the classified Change Award.
The awards are given based upon six elements, which spell the word Eagles. They include Encouraging and exhibiting Attitudes of Greatness, while Leading with high Expectations to Success.
CHS Principal Weston Jones nominated Allen for the honor.
In his nomination letter, Jones wrote that Allen, who is a CHS graduate, takes pride in making sure the CHS campus is clean.
“While making a positive impact with the students he sees in the hallways daily,” Jones wrote.
“He is always willing to lend a hand whenever is needed and is a man of character and integrity.”
Allen is also Campbellsville Middle School football head coach.
Jones wrote that it is in this capacity that Allen was recently placed in the right place at the right time when a student’s home caught fire.
He wrote that Allen was one of the first to arrive at the house, and did what many people wouldn’t have the courage to do.
“As precious seconds elapsed and no trained personnel in sight, Tommy went into the house in order to save and rescue a young child’s life,” Jones wrote.
While many would have wanted recognition or enjoyed being called a hero, Jones wrote, Allen just said he hopes someone would have done the same for his daughters.
“This speaks volumes to the type of person Tommy Allen is,” Jones wrote.
“Thank you for your hard work, dedication to this District, and, most importantly, for helping change the lives of our students daily.”
Allen is married to Jade Allen, and they have three children, Aubrey, who is a third-grader at Campbellsville Elementary School; Addison, a kindergartener at CES; and Aspen.
