CHS senior honored in Washington, D.C.

Campbellsville High School senior Jay Tucker was recently honored in Washington, D.C., for winning the Congressional App Challenge.

Earlier this school year, Tucker was named the winner of the First District 2018 Congressional App Challenge.

Her winning app is called “Learn Your Sounds!”

The app is intended to be an educational tool to help early learners or students with disabilities learn sounds and words.

Every spring, Congressional App Challenge winners are invited to Capitol Hill where they demo their apps to U.S. Representatives at a celebration called #HouseofCode.

At #HouseofCode, students heard from current lawmakers, toured the Library of Congress and more.

Tucker met with U.S. Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., who sponsors the First District Congressional App Challenge.

She attended the event with CHS computer science teacher Sonya Kessler.

Kessler stated that, two years ago, CHS was one of the first schools in the nation to offer AP Computer Science Principles.

“We use MIT’s App Inventor as part of our class and the Congressional App Challenge fits in well as a class project,” she stated.

“Jay Tucker has shown substantial growth in not just coding skills, but also in problem solving and critical thinking and learning how to work collaboratively with her peers. These real-life skills will ensure her success in the future and possibly a career in computer science, where many jobs are currently going unfilled.”

According to a news release, the Congressional App Challenge was created to help promote interest in STEM skills, which are abilities that are imminently important to the future of the United States.

Tucker is an AP computer science principles student and completed the app for the competition as part of a class project.
