CMS students learn about drug abuse

Campbellsville Middle School students recently learned about the harmful effects of abusing drugs.

Guidance Counselor Beth Wiedewitsch is talking to students about how dangerous it can be to use illegal drugs, and why it’s important to not abuse legal prescription medications.

Wiedewitsch said drug use is a problem in many areas, and students should know that using drugs simply isn’t cool.

She said people might feel they have to use drugs because they want to be popular. But, oftentimes, she said, using drugs has the opposite effect.

Wiedewitsch said drug use often causes pain for the user, but also his or her friends and family members.

She and her students read several stories written by those who have abused drugs or those whose family members have used them.

Wiedewitsch told her students that overdoses in the United States have tripled since 2010, and, in 2014, there were 47,000 drug overdoses.

In their discussion, students talked about how people become addicted to drugs and how using them greatly impacts people around the user.

Wiedewitsch said students can always talk to her about issues they are having, from peer pressure to struggles with classwork to troubles with their friends and more.
