CES Wings Express students learn about diversity

Campbellsville Elementary School Wings Express students recently learned about diversity.

Campbellsville University education student Taylor Black came to the after-school program to read and students about how everyone is different.

Black read the book “The Colors of Us,” by Karen Katz, which is about a young girl who begins to see the world in a new way by celebrating the differences and similarities in people.

After reading the story, Black told the students that diversity is the inclusion of different types of people, such as those who are of different races and embrace different religions.

Black said students shouldn’t judge one another based on their skin color, and it’s important to be kind and show respect to everyone.

Wings Express is a program to help students with homework and other activities. Students receive help with reading, math, science, technology, social skills and more. They also participate in activities to learn about nutrition.

The program, which is for students in kindergarten through third grade, is free to those who apply and are accepted.

Wings Express students stay at school from 3 to 5 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. There are no activities on Fridays.

Students are given a snack and then divided into groups to participate in programs that best fit their needs.

About 90 students participate in the Wings Express program.

Doretha Sanders is Wings Express director.

For more information about the program, call Sanders at (270) 465-4561.
