Former player named CHS head baseball coach

One of his former players will succeed Kirby Smith as Campbellsville High School’s head baseball coach.

Blake Milby, who has been an assistant coach for many years, and, before that played for CHS, will take the lead coaching position for the team’s 2018 season.

The announcement was made on Tuesday, July 25.

Smith, who is now superintendent at Campbellsville Independent Schools, completed his 11th season as head baseball coach in May.

“I am excited to see an Eagle baseball player turned Eagle coach chosen for the head coaching position,” Smith said.

“Coach Milby is a great leader, and I have no doubt he will continue to be a mentor for our players.”

CHS Principal David Petett said Milby, who is a social studies teacher and also an assistant football coach, is no stranger to the pride that comes with an Eagle baseball uniform.

“Blake is a former player and current assistant coach and has a great understanding of the pride and tradition that is Eagle baseball,” he said.

“I look forward to watching this program continue to shine under Coach Milby’s leadership and watching him mentor our young men on the baseball diamond.”

Milby said he feels blessed to be chosen as the head coach, and thanks Smith, Petett, CHS Athletic Director Tim Davis, Assistant Athletic Director Katie Wilkerson and the CHS Site-Based Decision Making Council members for the opportunity.

“I'm excited to continue the program’s rich tradition of success and to give back to my school, current players and future players,” he said.

“This position has been a dream of mine since I got into the coaching profession, and I couldn't be more eager to help our student-athletes reach their dreams as well.

“While I am excited to be the head coach, I realize, as a product of the program, that it is much greater than any one person and its most important component is our players.”

Milby said his goal for the CHS baseball program is to develop its players into young men of character.

“ … who are prepared to be successful in whatever path they choose following graduation. I also feel that we have the opportunity to be extremely competitive on the field and I am excited for our program to be a staple in the fifth region and across this state.”

Milby began playing baseball at CHS in 2003, and played until he graduated in 2008.

The team won the Class “A” fifth region title all six years Milby was on the roster and the 20th district championship in 2006 and 2008.

Milby was chosen to play on the Kentucky east-west all-star team his junior and senior years.

After graduation, Milby played baseball at Lindsey Wilson College before returning home to graduate from Campbellsville University in 2012.

He has been an assistant coach, under Smith’s leadership, ever since, in addition to teaching at CHS.

Milby was also the head coach of the American Legion Post 82 baseball team for players age 19 and younger, a team that captured the state championship title in 2013.

This summer, Milby was chosen by the Kentucky High School Baseball Coaches Association to coach the junior west all-star team.

In addition to playing baseball at CHS, Milby played football in 2005 and 2006 and golf in 2007 and 2008.

He has been an assistant football coach at CHS for the past five years.

Milby is the son of Earl and Paula Milby of Campbellsville.

He is married to MeLeigha Pollock Milby.
