CES reading teacher receives Dare to Soar award

Campbellsville Elementary School reading interventionist Laura Dicken has received this month’s Dare to Soar award.

Campbellsville Independent Schools Superintendent Mike Deaton made the presentation at the Campbellsville Board of Education’s special meeting on Monday, May 8.

In reading a letter nominating Dicken for the award, Deaton read that she is a very special person who is a great asset to CES and Campbellsville Independent Schools.

Dicken recently wrote and received a Read to Achieve grant for the school, he said.

“She is a great leader who communicates well with her CES colleagues,” Deaton read. “She also creates relationships with her students because she has a passion to make a difference in their lives.

“Mrs. Dicken has high expectations of her students and encourages them to always do their best.”

The letter states that Dicken is a great role model, leader and mentor in and out of the classroom.

CES first-grade teachers Shirley Cox, Lisa Mardis, Amanda Greer, Luci Shofner and Hailey Ogle nominated Dicken for the award.

In accepting the award, Dicken said she is honored to receive it.

“It’s not a job for me,” she said. “It’s a ministry.”

Dicken said she always tries to do her best so that her students can do their absolute best.

“The kids I work with now are typically struggling and it’s just an honor to see them reach their goals and see that lightbulb truly come on and say, ‘I can read this.’

“It’s just a lot of joy every day,” she said. “I have a great time with it.

“So thanks for allowing me to do what I love.”

Dicken has taught at CES since 1997.

She is married to Richard Dicken and they have three children, Abbie, a sophomore at Campbellsville High School; Jake, an eighth-grader at Campbellsville Middle School; and Levi, a sixth-grader at CMS.
