Campbellsville Middle School students were recognized at the Campbellsville Board of Education meeting on Monday, March 13, for receiving Academic Achiever awards.
CMS Principal Elisha Rhodes said, through the Leader in Me process, teachers and administrators are working with students to set goals for themselves.
“For some, it has been through academics, and, through some, it is just personal goals to help them become what we call ‘a better you,’” she said.
“Tonight we wanted to take a moment to recognize some kids for various reasons. Some students simply because, day in and day out, they give their all to themselves and to others, and for some to recognize the personal victories they have achieved this year,” Rhodes said.
Rhodes presented the awards, and spoke about each student being honored.
Lilyan Murphy is a ray of sunshine throughout not only the fourth grade, but CMS. She greets every adult and child with a caring “hello” and a smile on her face. Her positive attitude is contagious. She has a tremendous work ethic and excellent study habits. Murphy is a true definition of a role model for her peers.
Zeke Harris is having an amazing year in fourth grade. He is an enthusiastic learner who arrives each day ready to tackle new challenges. He is wonderful at leading class discussions and brings forth interesting and thoughtful ideas. Harris has a bright future ahead of him due to the work ethic that he puts in daily.
Tashaun Hart won the AARP grandparent essay contest at Campbellsville Middle School, went up an astonishing 15 points on his last math MAP test and recently received a 100 on his government test in social studies. He always gives his best effort and wears a smile for all to benefit from.
KyAshia Mitchell is being honored for her increase of 13 points in her math MAP score. She also has worked hard to receive all her AR points this nine weeks. Michell is a joy to have in class and can always be counted on to work hard and help others.
Mikeala Scharbrough is being recognized for her love of reading and her astonishing work to receive 96 AR points for the third nine weeks, and counting. Students are required to complete 12 points each nine weeks and Scharbrough has worked so hard to surpass that. She is truly a leader when it comes to reading.
Leigh Hicks is being recognized for the responsible hard worker she is. Throughout the last several weeks, Hicks has been absent due to health concerns. However, this has not deterred her from getting her work completed or made up. Hicks is always asking if there is anything else she has missed or needs to make up. It is truly remarkable when it comes to her staying on top of academics, despite the time she has to be out. Hicks is always respectful, wears a smile on her face and is a friend to everyone. We are so proud of her hard work to overcome this obstacle in her life.
Zachary Underwood has taken it upon himself to memorize the bus route and stops that his bus makes, and who gets off where. Not only has he done this for the stops that they take in the afternoon, but he has also paid attention in the morning, and, due to that, has memorized the entire bus route. On top of that, he knows students who have alternate stops and where those stops are as well.
Recently, Underwood’s knowledge has been very helpful in two different situations. One time, while a sub driver was on the bus, Underwood took a seat up front and informed the driver what stops to make and where to turn. He even volunteered to stay on the bus and not get off at his stop until the route was complete. Another situation occurred with a sub driver. As an elementary teacher brought a load of kids to the bus and loaded them, Underwood quickly examined the situation and realized the teacher had put the students on the wrong bus. He said immediately, “Mr. Tungate, I’m not sure what’s going on, but these students are not our kids for our route.” Without Underwood’s direction, a bus full of kids wouldn’t have made it home at the appropriate time. Without a doubt, he has a gift and we look forward to his employment as a driver for Campbellsville Independent one day.
Day in and day out, I joke around with Kaylyn Smith and continually say to her, “This is your school, I’m just trying to run it.” Although I am kidding with her, there is so much truth to that statement. We would like to recognize Smith this month for her leadership, not only amongst her peers, but students and teachers all over the state. Smith is a phenomenal facilitator of the student lighthouse team and voice for her peers when the students of CMS want change. She has presented at two conferences on the Leader In Me program and how she has been able to find her voice. Recently, she ran for office at the BETA convention and spoke in front of thousands of adults and students. Her growth in leadership truly is astonishing and the best news is, the best is still yet to come for her.
Taylor Whaley is being recognized for two reasons. The first is her improvement on her MAP reading test. The second round of MAP testing, Whaley was determined to put what she has been working on to the test, and, for the first time ever, truly take her time and try. The result lead to a 56-point increase. This is due to her hard work, not only in class, but through independent skill work with Kim Wagers on reading comprehension and fluency. Whaley also achieved a milestone this past nine weeks by earning a final grade of 76 in language arts. Her hard work is truly paying off, and, without a doubt, worth recognizing.
Sheddy Taylor is a student who has truly take a 360 degree turn this year at CMS. He has set personal goals and worked to monitor those goals toward success. Having to repeat the seventh grade last year, Sheddy was determined to better himself this year, and, not only has he bettered himself, he has matured into a young man with a contagious work ethic and attitude. Sheddy has worked diligently in the virtual lab to not only complete his seventh-grade year, but to work to master his eighth-grade year, putting him back with his freshman class beginning next school year. He has turned his behavior from one who constantly was in trouble to a leader who often takes time to sits with his fourth-grade brother during class, holding him accountable and not allowing him to make the same mistakes Sheddy once did. To top it all off, Taylor, for the first time ever, has received all of his AR points this year. We are truly proud of the individual he has become and is continuing to become.
Zaquan Cowan is a quiet leader at CMS you often don’t hear a peep from, however, he leads by example and determination. He is the definition of hard work, and, when he does speak up, he speaks in a mighty way. This past year, at the state KYA convention, Cowan not only boldly took a stand to run for president of the senate, but he did so with pride and confidence and was able to bring home the title. Cowan is the third consecutive officer elected from Campbellsville Middle School and we look forward to watching him flourish in his role.
