CHS FCA students encouraged to build their identities in God

Campbellsville High School Fellowship of Christian Athletes members recently heard a message from student teacher LeeAnn Grider.

Grider, an education student at Campbellsville University, spoke to CHS students about how important it is to build their identities in God.

Having played basketball most of her life, Grider said, she always introduced herself a player.

“I am who I am because of basketball,” she said.

Grider graduated from Russell County High School in 2013 and played on the Lady Tiger basketball team. She said she used to base her life on the number of points she scored in her games.

“God didn’t come up in girls’ basketball,” she said.

But, after tearing her ACL twice, Grider said, she has learned that she can no longer build her identity in basketball.

“There was no fighting back,” she said. “I couldn’t hang my hat on basketball anymore.

“Good took the thing I loved the most and feared losing.”

Grider encouraged students to have Godly friends who will be there for them even when times are hard.

“Sports don’t last forever,” she said. “Build your identity in God.”

Grider said Godly friends will keep a person on track and say when their friend is straying from Christ.

She said her experiences with basketball have humbled her and reshaped her priorities.

“That will show you how much is you and how much is God,” Grider said.

“High school and college don’t last forever,” she said. “The kingdom of God lasts forever. I want to bring as many people with me as I go.”

Grider has been a student teacher at Campbellsville Elementary School, and is currently teaching at CHS.

She is also an assistant girls’ basketball coach at Campbellsville Middle School.

CHS FCA members meet each Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. at the school. All students are welcome to attend.

During the meetings, students play an icebreaker game, listen to guest speakers and meet in small groups.
